History
Learn more about one of America’s largest domestic steel producers
Founded in 1993, today Steel Dynamics is one of the largest and most diversified domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States, with facilities located throughout the United States and in Mexico. We operate using a circular manufacturing model, producing lower-carbon-emission, quality steel using electric arc furnace technology (EAF) with recycled ferrous scrap as the primary input. Our circular economy is driven by the passion and dedication of our innovative teams at each of our operating platforms: steel, steel fabrication, and metals recycling.
1996
Steel production began at our first greenfield EAF flat roll steel mill located in Butler, Indiana.
Steel Dynamics goes public with our initial listing on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange under the symbol STLD.
2000
Constructed our first steel joist and deck facility in Butler, Indiana, diversifying our product offerings and providing pull-through volume opportunity for our flat roll steel mill.
2002
Began operating our second greenfield EAF steel mill in Columbia City, Indiana, diversifying our product offerings to include structural steels.
Acquired our third EAF steel mill in Pittsboro, Indiana and entered the special-bar-quality market.
2003
Constructed our first flat roll steel paint line in Butler, Indiana, expanding our product offerings into higher-margin value-added products.
Acquired a flat roll steel processing line in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
2006
Acquired Roanoke Electric Steel, adding two EAF steel mills to our operations, with merchant and specialty steel product offerings, and expanding our fabrication operations.
2007
Added our metals recycling platform through the acquisition of OmniSource, providing us a secure source of higher-quality scrap for our steel operations.
Expanded our flat roll steel galvanizing capacity through the acquisition of The Techs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
2008
Expanded our structural steel mill with the addition of the medium section mill.
2010
Established a national joist and deck fabrication footprint with the acquisition of three steel joist fabrication plants.
2014
Doubled our EAF flat roll steel production capability and expanded our presence in the southern U.S. markets through the acquisition of our Columbus Flat Roll Division in Columbus, Mississippi.
2015
Entered the premium rail markets, producing and welding rail in 1,600-foot lengths through expansion at our Structural and Rail Division.
Expanded our Engineered Bar Products Division, increasing capacity over 50% and finishing capabilities.
Acquired steel decking assets, further diversifying our steel fabrication product offerings.
2016
Acquired Vulcan, a special-bar-quality steel fabrication facility, allowing us to enter the threaded rod market.
2017
Added a paint line at our Columbus Flat Roll Division, further diversifying and enriching our product mix.
2018
Diversified our product offerings through the reinforcing bar expansion at our Roanoke Bar Division.
Increased our flat roll steel value-added capacity and further diversified our product mix through the acquisition of Heartland in Terre Haute, Indiana.
2019
The reinforcing bar expansion at our Structural and Rail Division further diversified our product mix, and provided another use of the excess melt and cast capability.
Acquired 75% of the equity interest of United Steel Supply, LLC, a distributor of painted and coated flat roll steel coil to the niche regional roll-former market.
2020
Added a third value-added galvanizing line at our Columbus Flat Roll Division, increasing our galvanizing capacity.
2021
Constructing an EAF flat roll steel mill in Sinton, Texas, with next-generation steelmaking capabilities, expanding our presence in the southwest U.S. and Mexican steel market, and will increase our annual steel production capacity over 25%.
